HIV: Prevention, Testing and Patient-Centered Care in Clinical Practice

VIH: prévention, dépistage et accueil en pratique médicale

An event dedicated to information, prevention and inclusive care

On December 6, the Medical Centre had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Olivier Tshikung for an internal event with our medical team. During this session, Dr Tshikung shared his clinical experience in the fight against HIV, highlighting best practices in prevention, testing, and—above all—the importance of providing welcoming, respectful and patient-centred care.

The discussion focused not only on current medical approaches, but also on the importance of language, communication and clinical attitude when addressing HIV, HIV testing and PrEP with patients, in order to create a safe, non-judgmental environment.

HIV: why accurate information remains essential for prevention

Despite major advances in medicine, HIV is still surrounded by fear, stigma and misinformation. Many people delay HIV testing due to anxiety, lack of information or fear of being judged.

It is important to remember that:

  • HIV can be present without symptoms for many years

  • Early diagnosis allows effective treatment and follow-up

  • HIV prevention today is based on evidence-based, safe and effective strategies

Access to reliable information is a key element of HIV prevention.

HIV testing: a key step in preventive healthcare

One of the key messages shared during Dr Tshikung’s presentation was clear: 👉 HIV testing should be considered a routine part of preventive sexual healthcare.

An HIV test is recommended:

  • After unprotected sexual intercourse

  • When changing sexual partners

  • Before starting PrEP

  • As part of regular sexual health check-ups

  • Whenever there is doubt or concern

HIV testing is quick, confidential and reliable, and allows individuals to make informed decisions about their health and that of their partners.

HIV prevention today: more than one effective option

HIV prevention has evolved significantly and now relies on a combination of complementary strategies tailored to individual needs.

PrEP: a major advancement in HIV prevention

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a preventive treatment for HIV-negative individuals at increased risk of exposure to HIV.

During the event, Dr Tshikung emphasised that:

  • PrEP is highly effective and safe when prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional

  • Regular medical follow-up and testing are required

  • PrEP is part of a broader, holistic approach to sexual health

Common questions include:

  • “How do I start PrEP?”

  • “Is PrEP right for me?”

  • “Are there side effects with PrEP?”

These questions should be discussed during a confidential medical consultation, adapted to each person’s situation.

Creating trust: the importance of language and clinical approach

A central topic of the discussion was how healthcare professionals talk about HIV. The words used, the tone of the conversation and the clinician’s attitude play a crucial role in patient engagement.

Providing patient-centred care means:

  • Using clear and respectful language

  • Avoiding judgement or assumptions

  • Taking into account each patient’s background and concerns

  • Encouraging open and honest discussions about sexual health

These elements are essential to promote HIV testing, access to PrEP and appropriate medical follow-up.

Reliable information as part of HIV prevention in Switzerland

In addition to medical care, access to reliable information is essential. In Switzerland, platforms such as lovelife.ch play an important role by providing clear, up-to-date information on:

  • HIV

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

  • Prevention strategies

  • Sexual health

Accurate information helps reduce stigma and supports informed health choices.

When should you consult a healthcare professional?

You should consider consulting a healthcare professional if you:

  • Wish to have an HIV test

  • Are considering starting PrEP

  • Have experienced a potential risk exposure

  • Have questions about HIV prevention or STIs

  • Are looking for confidential, personalised medical advice

Appropriate medical follow-up allows risk assessment, clear guidance and evidence-based care.
